Robin Williams stars in 1980;s Popeye Now in 4K UltraHD from paramount Pictures Home Entertainment

On August 11, 2014, the world lost a little of its smile, and the entertainment field lost a comedy legend when Robin Williams passed away. He left behind performances that will never be forgotten and will be enjoyed for generations to come. One such performance was in 1980 when he put on the sailor outfit and stepped into the huge shoes and became the live-action version of the cartoon character Popeye. 

That film is celebrating its 46th anniversary. It is so hard to believe that I am writing that. The film is almost half a century old. Unbelievable. Paramount Picture Home Entertainment has now released Popeye on 4K UltraHD.

Synopsis: Based on the long-running comic strip created by E.C. Segar (and less on the animated cartoons created by Max Fleischer, which were decidedly different in tone and approach), Popeye follows the sailor man with the mighty arms (played by Robin Williams in his first major film role) as he arrives in the seaside community of Sweethaven in search of his long-lost father. Popeye meets and quickly falls for the slender Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall, in the role she was born to play), but Olive's hand has already been promised to the hulking Bluto (Paul Smith), of whom Olive can say little except, well, he's large. Eventually, Popeye and Olive are brought together by Swee' Pea (Wesley Ivan Hurt), an adorable foundling, and Popeye finally meets his dad, Poopdeck Pappy (Ray Walston). 

Director Robert Altman brings his undeniable style and flair to this comedy musical. The et design of the town of Sweethaven is out of this world. Robin Williams is great as Popeye. The only one whose voice acting could have been better would have been Dave Coulier. As good as Robin Williams, Ray Walston and Paul Smith are the standout is Shelley Duvall. If Olive Oyl were to step out of the cartoon into the real world, she would be Shelly Duvall.

Popeye is not a perfect film, not by a long shot. But boy do I love this film. The absurdity of it all is just hilarious. The snappy dialogue, great music and spectacular sets make this film an unforgettable classic film for the whole family.

Paramount has transferred Popeye to 4K in 2160p and is presented in 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The audio options are an English DTS-HD MA 5.1 and an English Dolby Digital 2.0. There is also the option for subtitles in English SDH, French and Spanish

Watching this film in UltraHD is an extreme pleasure. I don't know how many times I have seen this film on DVD. But now seeing it this wayIs like watching a whole new movies/ The color hues are out of this world. The picture is crisp and clean the audio is clear. There is no signs of damage to this print, no digital artifacts or audio anomalies.
